Movement Plays

A movement play conveys the idea of the play through movements and motions.

Two things about movement plays:
1. It doesn't need to be silently performed to a song. You can talk.
2. Don't think of it as dance. It can be, but it's mainly movement and motions.

Elements of Movements and Motions
As you're building out your movement play, play around with the elements below. Think about how the piece changes and evolves as you're playing around with these things.
  • Spatial Relationship - The distance between performers and/or audience
  • Tempo - Make things faster and slower
  • Gesture - Things and actions becoming abstract, turning into dance
  • Scale - Large and small on both the individual level as well as the number of performers
